BIO
Lala Leelarathna is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction and Consultant in Diabetes at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
After graduating with First Class Honours in MBBS from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, he completed specialist training in the UK and earned an MSc from King’s College London. In 2014, he was awarded a PhD from the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK, for his research on hypoglycaemia, automated insulin delivery systems and continuous glucose monitoring in type 1 diabetes, work that laid the foundation for his ongoing contributions to diabetes technology research.
Dr Leelarathna has been a leading investigator in numerous diabetes technology studies evaluating the clinical and cost effectiveness of automated insulin delivery and continuous glucose monitoring systems.
He has co-authored over 125 peer-reviewed publications, including landmark studies in The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, and Diabetes Care. He was awarded the Winner of the NHS England Outstanding Contribution Award for Services in Diabetes-Quality in Care (QiC) award in 2019.
Dr Leelarathna’s current work is focused on evaluating the role of continuous glucose monitoring and automated insulin delivery in adults with type 2 diabetes and those with advanced kidney disease, including those undergoing dialysis treatment.
