RESEARCH
Evina leads a pioneering research team at Imperial College London, specializing in sustainable water management, circularity and environmental engineering. With a vision for a sustainable, circular, and smart society, the team addresses critical global challenges by developing advanced technologies and methodologies for wastewater treatment, resource recovery, and the digitization of water and industrial systems.
Their expertise spans sustainability and circularity measurement and assessment, data-driven analytics, and smartification of processes, utilizing machine learning and artificial intelligence. Professor Katsou’s research targets a broad spectrum of key sectors, including water and wastewater, energy and renewables, agro-food and biofuels, manufacturing and industry (such as ceramics, metals, minerals, and the chemical industry), maritime and transport, as well as health and technology (covering pharmaceuticals, electronics, batteries, and textiles).
By focusing on tailored solutions to enhance sustainability and circularity across these sectors, Professor Katsou’s team is actively involved in over 20 Horizon Europe projects and strategic partnerships. Their research influences international policy development, aligning with major initiatives such as the European Green Deal and water reuse regulations. This work bridges scientific innovation with practical applications, driving progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), decarbonization, net-zero targets, and resilient water-smart societies.
Research areas:
Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery Technologies and Green Technology Innovations, AI-Driven Environmental Solutions and Big Data Analytics, Greenhouse Gas monitoring and mitigation in Water systems, Carbon Footprint Mitigation Strategies, Circular Economy Implementation: Water, Biobased Systems and other sectors, Sustainable Water Resources and Environmental Management Metrics, Renewable Resource Utilization and Biorefinery Approaches in Industry applications, Sustainability & Circularity Measurement and Assessment, Dynamic Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA), Risk Assessment and Social Impact Assessments
