BIO
Emiliano is Professor of Experimental Physics and Energy Conversion at the Faculty of Physics, LMU Munich, where he leads the Nanomaterials for Energy group (www.nano-energy.org). He is also a visiting researcher in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London (UK) and in the Department of Chemistry and Nanoscience at Ewha Womans University (South Korea). Since March 2026, Emiliano has been appointed as Associate Editor at ACS Catalysis.
His research sits at the interface of chemistry and physics, combining the design of functional nanomaterials with advanced characterization and optical approaches to understand and control energy conversion at the nanoscale. Motivated by sustainability, his work targets processes and technologies relevant to solar fuels, catalysis, and energy-relevant interfaces. He has authored more than 180 peer-reviewed articles, holds four patents, co-founded two spin-offs, and contributed to translating fundamental insights into practical tools.
Emiliano studied chemistry at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP), Argentina. He has received several European Commission distinctions, including a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship at Imperial College London, and ERC funding for his CATALIGHT and SURFLIGHT projects at LMU. In 2021, the Royal Society of Chemistry recognized him as an Emerging Investigator in Materials Science, and since 2022 he has been consistently ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited researchers. Since 2025, he has served as a panel member for the evaluation of ERC Starting Grants, appointed by the ERC Scientific Council. In June 2025, he served as Chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Plasmonically Powered Processes.
Emiliano serves on the Executive Board of the DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence e-conversion 2.0, where he is also a Principal Investigator and research area coordinator. With approximately €40 million in funding, e-conversion investigates energy conversion at interfaces—where light, charges, and matter interact—laying foundations for next-generation energy technologies. He has served on the scientific board of the Center for NanoScience (CeNS) since 2020 and is a member of the Bavarian program on Solar Technologies, SolTech, the Young Academy of Europe (YAE), and the American Chemical Society (ACS). He is an International Consultant to the Academic Committee of Shanghai University’s Carbon Neutrality Research Center.
In 2024, Emiliano became the first external Associate Researcher at TUM’s Catalysis Research Center (CRC-TUM), and in 2025 he joined the Solar Batteries Center (TUM–MPI). He is also CSO of INSyT Tech., a spin-off from his group developing advanced microscopy for energy research. Emiliano co-edited the first book on Plasmonic Catalysis (Wiley, 2021) and serves on the editorial boards of ACS Nano, ACS Energy Letters, Advanced Photonics Nexus, and eScience, with guest editorships in ACS Photonics and Communications Chemistry.
