DrDominic Marshall

Dr Dominic C Marshall is a Clinical Research Fellow (PhD Candidate) in the Division of Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine and Intensive Care, and a Specialist Registrar in Respiratory and Intensive Care Medicine. He combines clinical work in critical care and respiratory medicine with a research programme focused on acute hypoxic respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). He is funded by a Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship for his doctoral work on “Identification of Novel Phenotypes of Acute Lung Injury Using Multimodal Longitudinal Data.” 

Originally trained as a molecular and cellular biologist, Dr Marshall has developed a multidisciplinary skill set spanning laboratory science, clinical medicine, epidemiology, and machine learning. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications across critical care, respiratory medicine, epidemiology and health data science, and his work has contributed to understanding global trends in respiratory disease and critical illness outcomes.

His broader academic activity includes teaching on machine learning in healthcare, supervision of students, and international collaboration with groups such as the Laboratory for Computational Physiology (MIT). He is a founding member and trustee of the Medical Data Research Collaborative (MDR Collab), an international multidisciplinary network using routinely collected data to address questions in critical care and population health.

During medical school, he received 14 prizes, ranked first in his year every year, was awarded Proxime Accessit in the London Gold Medal examination, and held a Santander Undergraduate Scholarship for Academic Excellence. Subsequently, he has been awarded an Imperial College President’s PhD Scholarship and American Thoracic Society International Trainee Scholarships (2020, 2023).
