BIO
Dexter Penn is an Alzheimer's Research UK Clinical Fellow in the Department of Brain Sciences at Imperial College London. Dr Penn qualified at the University of the West Indies in 2010, and his career spans clinical neurology, stroke medicine, dementia clinical trials, and entrepreneurship.
Dr Penn has extensive experience in cognitive neurology gained at the Dementia Research Centre at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, where he worked for over seven years. At Queen Square, he gained skills in neuropsychological assessment, biomarker-informed clinical phenotyping, and clinical trial management. Dr Penn contributed to several studies including the observational familial Alzheimer's disease study as well as intervention studies investigating anti-amyloid immunoglobulins and antisense oligonucleotides.
In 2017, Dr Penn founded Kalgera, a financial technology platform designed to safeguard vulnerable adults at risk of financial exploitation. The company raised over £1 million, and Dr Penn contributed to public policy on vulnerable customers at the Financial Conduct Authority and the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Longevity. He returned to full-time clinical academic research in 2023 with a broader perspective and was awarded a Doctoral Clinical Fellowship by Alzheimer's Research UK in 2026 to undertake a PhD at Imperial. During this four-year Fellowship, Dr Penn will be investigating the haemodynamic mechanisms of cerebral small vessel disease under the supervision of Professor Alastair Webb.
Dr Penn is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians and holds an MSc in Research Methods and Healthcare Quality at the UCL Institute of Health Informatics. He is a Guarantors of Brain Entry Fellow and a Yeoman of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. Born in the British Virgin Islands, Dr Penn is also an exhibited photographer and genealogy researcher specialising in 18th and 19th century Caribbean genealogy research. He is also a keen home cook, enjoys writing and reading widely, and sings as a tenor with London Contemporary Voices.
