BIO
Daniel is a research associate in air quality and energy policy. He is part of the Integrated Assessment Unit led by Professor Helen ApSimon within Imperial's Centre for Environmental Policy. Daniel's key responsibility is to conduct cutting edge interdisciplinary research across the fields of transportation, energy, and air pollution, where his work directly assists government policy decisions.
Daniel's work originally focused on electric vehicles, which was the topic of his PhD, but has grown to include transportation, energy systems, and air quality more broadly. He has developed a model of the UK road transport sector that projects how the fleet will evolve under different scenarios and policy decisions. This model has been applied in research papers and for providing evidence to the UK government's Department for Transport and Defra; this evidence aided the PM2.5 targets in the Environment Act. His other research contributions have shown how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted GB energy demand and emissions throughout 2020, what real-time and marginal emissions have been produced from charging EVs, and the long term impact of road transport electrification may have on PM2.5 exposure up to 2050.
Daniel is a Postdoc & Fellows Rep for CEP, representing the interests of Early Career Researchers at the departmental, faculty, and college wide level. Daniel also has teaching responsibilities, assistant supervising a PhD student and supervises multiple MSc students each year.
Daniel's PhD studentship was part of the Science and Solutions for a Changing Planet DTP at Imperial's Grantham Institute, and was part funded by the UK's Department for Transport. Before joining Imperial for his PhD in 2018, Daniel studied Engineering at Cambridge (MEng), where the course spent two years giving Daniel a foundation in all engineering fields followed by two years specialising. This broad engineering background combined with his specialisation in Electronic & Electrical / Electrical and Information Engineering has given Daniel a basis for undertaking interdisciplinary technical research that he has used throughout his career.
