Professor Deborah ('Debbie') Jarvis is Professor in Public Health at the National Heart and Lung Institute.
She worked in clinical medicine for several years in the UK and overseas and then trained in public health in South East Thames. During her training she worked with Professor Peter Burney on the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) and on completion continued to study the epidemiology of asthma, allergy and lung function within the context of major international population based studies.
Professor Jarvis currently leads the EU H2020-funded Ageing Lungs in European Cohorts project, a consortium of adult respiratory cohorts examining the development of COPD with ageing. She coordinates the ECRHS, an international cohort to examine asthma, allergy and lung function in ageing populations, is cohort theme lead within the MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health and works within the CF-EpiNet;Harnessing data to improve lives project
Professor Jarvis is a member of the Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollution and of the Indoor Air Pollution Guideline Committee at the National Institute for Health Care Excellence. She has acted as subject matter expert for the World Health Organization (Europe) on the health effects of indoor nitrogen dioxide, was the lead for adult asthma in the Global Burden of Disease Project 2010 and is past chair of the Epidemiology group within the European Respiratory Society. She is Associate Editor for Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
Professor Jarvis contributes to teaching and management of the Respiratory BSc course, and teaches on Masters Courses in Modern Epidemiology/Public Health and in Allergy. She is a Senior Tutor within the School of Medicine
