BIO

Daniel Castaneda Mogollon, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. Daniel completed his PhD at the University of Calgary, where his research focused on the applicability of amplicon deep sequencing across various biological systems, including P. falciparum, SARS-CoV-2, and C. difficile. His previous postdoctoral research spanned two projects aimed at understanding the gut microbiome profile and overall dynamics in (i) children with type 1 diabetes, and (ii) Canadian patients with Parkinson's disease in Alberta and Vancouver, compared with their spousal counterparts.

His research at Imperial College London involves analyzing Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS) data of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the UK. Since 2017, the UK has used WGS for diagnostic confirmation, identification of drug-resistant isolates, and understanding and interrupting TB transmission. Daniel currently leads this analysis, combining genomic and epidemiological data to estimate transmission, identify outbreaks, and support case tracing.
