BIO
Dr Deepak Barnabas started out as a Teaching Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London in 2019, with teaching responsibilities in the undergraduate School of Medicine, predominantly within Phase 1 (Years 1-3) of the 6-year MBBS/BSc programme at Imperial. He was then a Senior Learning Designer with the Digital Education Office for two years, and is currently a Teaching Fellow in Phase 2 (Year 4) of the MBBS/BSc programme. He is also Deputy lead for Digital Development for the MBBS programme, where he is involved with multiple projects that aim to enhance student learning through technology.
Background
Deepak is a molecular biologist by training. He completed his PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of Cambridge and trained at the Medical Research Council - Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC-LMB), where he spent five years. His research has been on the assembly mechanisms of macromolecules within vertebrate cells. He also holds an MSc in Molecular Medicine from University College London (UCL), an MEd in University Learning and Teaching from Imperial College London and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
Teaching activities
Deepak has been involved in the design, development, delivery, teaching and assessment of the Clinical and Scientific Integration (CSI) module, one of the six modules in Phase 1 (Years 1-3) of the MBBS programme. He also teaches in the Principles of Medicine (POM), Bioregulatory Systems (BRS), and the Clinical Research and Investigation (CRI) modules, and has served as an examiner across several modules within the MBBS/BSc programme.
Other responsibilities
Alongside his teaching responsibilities, Deepak has served as an academic tutor to over 30 students and supervised six student research projects since the implementation of the new MBBS/BSc curriculum in 2019. He is actively engaged in the admissions process and has participated in multiple Faculty of Medicine working groups, including those focused on education space (e.g. Royal College of Science refurbishment) and portfolio development (e.g. Learning Analytics scoping project).
On the digital education side, Deepak has developed a wide range of synchronous and asynchronous learning materials for several modules. In addition to his student-facing work, he delivers learning design and digital education workshops for colleagues across the Faculty.
