ProfessorDomniki Asimaki

Domniki Asimaki is Chair in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. She joined Imperial in 2025 from the California Institute of Technology, where she was Professor of Mechanical and Civil Engineering and Co-Director of the Center for Geomechanics and Mitigation of Geohazards, an NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Center. She previously held faculty positions at the Georgia Institute of Technology and completed postdoctoral research in strong motion seismology at UC Santa Barbara, following her Sc.D. in Civil Engineering from MIT.

Her research combines physics-based modelling, machine learning and field observations to understand how local soil and topographic conditions shape earthquake ground motion, with applications ranging from site-specific soil-structure interaction to regional seismic risk assessment of distributed infrastructure. She is the recipient of the 2026 ASCE Shamsher Prakash Award and Lecture, the 2017 Bodossaki Award of Scientific Excellence, and the 2014 ISSMGE Young Investigator Award, and has served on numerous editorial boards and technical committees, including as Associate Editor of the Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering and on the Board of Governors of the ASCE Geo-Institute.
