RESEARCH
Daan’s research explores experimentally-accessible spin systems whose behaviour can be described by tractable Hamiltonians. These systems are attractive because they connect fundamental models of spin and statistical physics to materials whose collective behaviour can be measured, understood and ultimately exploited in practical devices.
His current research uses optically addressable spin defects in diamond to develop new quantum sensors. A particular focus is room-temperature diamond masers, which offer a route towards quantum-limited microwave amplification with potential applications in communications, radar and quantum computing. The well-defined physics of these spin ensembles makes it possible to connect microscopic material properties directly to device performance.
His group combines physics-based models of spin dynamics with electromagnetic simulation, materials and device design, fabrication, and optical and microwave characterisation. Experimental capabilities include purpose-built confocal microscopy for optically detected magnetic resonance, photoluminescence spectroscopy and excited-state lifetime measurements.
This work builds on Daan’s earlier research into the high-frequency dynamics of ferromagnetic nanostructures and the statistical physics of artificial and pyrochlore spin ices. He retains a broader interest in frustrated magnetic systems, magnonics, spintronics and neuromorphic computing.
Prospective PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and collaborators interested in these areas are encouraged to get in touch.
