Deepa Arachchillage is a professor of practice in Haemostasis and Thrombosis and a consultant haematologist specialised in Haemostasis and Thrombosis. She was awarded MRC CARP fellowship in 2021 and 2024.
She completed MD (res) at the University College London in July 2015 on antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), complement activation and direct acting oral anticoagulants. She is the founder of antiphospholipid syndrome clinic at Hammersmith Hospital.
Her principal research interests are inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, effect of oral anticoagulant types on the coagulant phenotype of vascular endothelium and thrombosis, autoimmune thrombotic disorders including antiphospholipid syndrome, anticoagulation and acquired bleeding disorders mainly related to cardiac surgeries and extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in both paediatric and adults. She has published over 120 peer reviewed high impact factor journal publications and six book chapters in the field of haemostasis and thrombosis. She is chief /principal investigator in number of clinal and translational research studies.
She is the chair for the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) Scientific and Standardization Subcommittee (SSC) on Antiphospholipid Syndrome. She is a member of several other national and internal scientific and educational boards including the British Society for Haematologists’ haemostasis and thrombosis Task Force where she led several national and also contributed to the international guidelines in Hamostasis and Thrombosis. She is also a steering committee member of the National External Quality Assurance Scheme (NEQAS), UK-TReN (the UK’s thrombosis research network which is a part of the international INVENT-VTE network), British Society for Haemostasis and thrombosis (BSHT), Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases (AIRD) Research Advisory Group for Versus Arthritis, UK, and a member of International Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) Scientific Oversight Committee.
As a recognition of her contribution to research, she was awarded National Institute of Heath and Research (NIHR) and British Society for Haematology (BSH) researcher of the year 2021 and runner up of the outstanding individual of the NIHR CRN.
