BIO

Dr Davide Amato is an Associate Professor in Computational Astrodynamics at the Department of Aeronautics. Dr Amato’s research aims at ensuring that space exploration is conducted safely and responsibly, preserving the benefits and significance of space activities for future generations. His primary research theme is Space Situational Awareness (SSA), namely detecting, tracking, characterising, and predicting the motion and behaviour of satellites and space debris. His work in SSA aims to mitigate the risk of harmful collisions between objects in space and enhance transparency of space activities. His complementary interests are autonomous systems for Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) and exploration of cislunar space.


Dr Amato’s research is primarily computational and is within the field of orbit determination. Together with his students and collaborators in the Computational Astrodynamics group (COAST), Dr Amato develops robust orbit and uncertainty propagation methods for orbital regimes spanning from low Earth to cislunar orbits. Current work includes developing system identification approaches to spacecraft characterisation, as well as techniques for realistic orbit uncertainty quantification and mitigation. COAST is developing the Compact Imperial College London OPtical Station (CICLOPS), a small telescope for optical satellite observations to co-design SSA algorithms on real hardware.
