DrChunyi Gao

Chunyi Gao is a Research Associate at the Dyson School of Design Engineering, Imperial College London. His research focuses on advanced and sustainable manufacturing of lightweight materials and structures, with particular interests in composite and multi-material systems. His work combines experimental characterisation, process development and numerical modelling to understand material behaviour during manufacturing and to develop faster, more energy-efficient and reliable processing technologies for automotive and aerospace applications.

Before joining the School as a Research Associate, Chunyi completed his PhD at Imperial College London in 2026, where his research investigated advanced forming and thermal processing of thermoplastic composites and fibre-metal structures. His doctoral work explored how material behaviour, interfaces and thermal conditions can be controlled during manufacturing, including the development of induction-assisted processing approaches for efficient non-isothermal forming.

Chunyi received his MSc in Advanced Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College London in 2022, following his undergraduate studies at the University of Nottingham, which he completed in 2021.
