ProfessorCharlotte Bevan

Professor Charlotte Bevan, MA, PhD (Cantab.), is head of the Prostate Cancer research laboratories and deputy head of the Division of Cancer at the Department of Surgery and Cancer, Imperial College London.

Her research focus on androgen signalling and its role in development and disease began during her PhD at the University of Cambridge, which was concerned with Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, a paediatric condition. This expanded to the role of androgen signalling in prostate cancer progression and therapy during her postdoctoral fellowship at the ICRF Lincoln’s Inn Fields Laboratories and move to Imperial College in 1999. Here, her team’s research interests have expanded to include the study of key non-coding RNAs in prostate (and other) cancers, the role of the microenvironment in disease progression, the abscopal effect, as well as mechanisms of escape from hormonal control of prostate tumours. Importantly, she has a number of collaborations with colleagues in the physical sciences to pursue convergence science approaches to drug delivery and biomarker detection.

In addition to her research, Professor Bevan is one of the two Consuls for the Faculty of Medicine. She has several teaching roles, acts as a mentor for early career researchers, and is the Director of Postgraduate Studies for Surgery & Cancer, overseeing the progress of all PhD students.

She is Honorary Sceretary of the British Association for Cancer research, and chairs their Meetings and Training committee. She has also been a longstanding member of the Research Advisory Committees of Prostate Cancer UK and Tenovus Cancer Care, Executive committees of Society for Endocrinology, and member of many national and international review panels, and conference organising committees. She is committed to supporting and promoting up and coming cancer research scientists in all these roles.
