DrCharlotte Sutherell

Charlotte is a Principal Teaching Fellow, specialising in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry. She is involved in the full range of undergraduate teaching activities within the Department, including curriculum design, lecturing, and coordination of the Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry degree programme. Charlotte is an active member of the pastoral team and works on projects to improve student experience, such as transition to university. She has a particular interest in inclusivity in chemistry education and has been the Departmental Disabilities Officer since 2020.

Charlotte is engaged in chemistry education research and evaluation of practice, including through supervision of PhD, MSci and BSc projects. Current research interests include exploration of staff perspectives on feedback and assessment in chemistry impact course design and how designs support student learning and skills development. She is also interested in the transition of students into university chemistry and how students learn organic chemistry.


Biographical Details

Charlotte has been a Teaching Fellow at Imperial College since 2018, during which time she has been recognised for excellence in Teaching and Supporting the Student Experience. Before focusing on teaching in higher education, Charlotte was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the group of Professor Ed Tate, working on a Cancer Research UK funded medicinal chemistry project and managing the MRes in Drug Discovery and Development Programme.

She graduated from the University of Oxford in 2011 with a first-class MChem, completing her final year project with Professor Andrew D. Hamilton on peptide mimetics. Having become fascinated by the possibilities and challenges of applying chemistry to solve biological problems, she moved to the University of Cambridge to join the PhD Training Programme in Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry. Charlotte completed her PhD under the supervision of Professor Steven V. Ley and Dr James D. Brenton, developing chemical probes of bromodomain to study their therapeutic relevance in ovarian cancer.

Beyond chemistry, Charlotte is a keen musician and singer, and is a currently a member of The Bach Choir.
