BIO

Dr Carmine graduated with honor in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Bari (Italy), where he got also a PhD in Mechanical and Biomechanical Design and was Research Fellow until April 2014. Currently, he is recipient of a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship at the Imperial College, where he has joined the Tribology Group.

His research interests include the development of computational and experimental techniques to study the contact mechanics between elastic and viscoelastic rough solids. Dr Putignano addresses these issues at a fundamental level, in order to increase scientific understanding of hard and soft materials mechanics, and hence enable the development of more efficient and durable components. Indeed, possible application of his research deals with the optimization of traditional mechanical elements, like tires and seals, and a deeper comprehension of the working principles of soft biomechanical and bio-inspired systems.

Dr Putignano has published over 35 papers in international journals and conference proceedings; furthermore, his PhD thesis has been published as a book. He serves as a referee for a wide number of international peer reviewed journals in the field of Applied Mechanics and Tribology. He has been invited to hold seminars in international institutions, like the Institute of Physics (London, 2012) e the Technical University of Berlin (2013). He collaborates in many academic and industrial research projects.
