BIO
Christian Morgenstern is a researcher in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Imperial College London. His work focuses on the statistical and computational modelling of infectious disease transmission, intervention effectiveness, and socioeconomic heterogeneity in health outcomes.
His methodological approach centres on Bayesian hierarchical and causal modelling, integrating diverse data streams — including epidemiological surveillance, genomic sequences, pharmaceutical & non-pharmaceutical interventions and socioeconomic indicators — to produce policy-relevant evidence. His research on SARS-CoV-2 in England and Denmark has quantified structural inequalities in disease burden, reconstructed transmission networks from genomic and social network data, and evaluated the joint dynamics of transmission, mortality, and economic output during the pandemic.
Alongside this, Christian leads systematic reviews and meta-analyses of epidemiological parameters for priority pathogens. He has contributed to the production of comprehensive parameter libraries for SARS, Marburg virus disease, and Lassa fever, published in The Lancet Microbe, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, and The Lancet Global Health, which are actively used in outbreak modelling and preparedness planning internationally. He has also co-led genomic surveillance analyses of the 2022–2023 cholera outbreak in Malawi, linking climate variability to outbreak dynamics.
Christian is a substantial contributor to the epireview R package, providing open-source infrastructure for collating and standardising epidemiological parameters across pathogens.
His work has been presented at the Epidemics10 conference, the Infectious Disease Modelling (IDM) conference, ASTMH, and the Workshop on the Economics of Pandemic Preparedness, and has contributed evidence to the WHO Collaboratory Epiparameter working group.
