RESEARCH

My current research interest is looking into how single vortex states in magnetite nanoparticles respond to stress. Much of the literature has focused on the formation and stability of single domain particles in the Earth as a means of detecting and recording paleomagnetism, with single vortex states being considered both rare and unstable. Recent research in the paleomagnetism domain has suggested that these magnetic vortex states are far more stable and ubiquitous than we once realised and are highly sensitive to stress and strain. Using electron holography, magnetic characterisation and simulations, we hope to be able to better understand how these vortex states respond to stress and strain to better understand and predict geological phenomena.

 

Beyond earth science, I have a strong passion for complex, unconventional magnetic systems (e.g. frustrated non-collinear antiferromagnets) and their application for sustainable technologies such as refrigeration, memory and energy storage.
