DrChris Carswell

I am an academic neurologist with a special interest in cognitive disorders, particularly Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). I trained in neurology in London and Sydney (ABN Australasian Fellow) and carried out a PhD working on novel therapies for prion disease at the MRC Prion Unit and the National Prion Clinic. I subsequently carried out research exploring the use of PET-imaging in patients with cognitive impairment and developed an interest in NPH and established a dedicated NPH-clinic at Charing Cross Hospital. I am also the current Honorary Secretary and founding trustee for the South of England Neurosciences Association

I led a Cochrane Review Group assessing the evidence base for shunting in NPH and I am currently the chair of the Association of British Neurologists special interest group in NPH. I was interviewed on the Practical Neurology Podcast. My current research is supported by the Medical Research Council and focuses on understanding how hydrocephalus develops in adults, how it causes disease, identifying which patients benefit from shunt-surgery and understanding why some patients do not improve with shunt-surgery. I am currently performing observational studies in NPH patients to answer these important questions and help patients with NPH.
