Dr Claire Calderwood is an Academic Clinical Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College London. Her work focuses on global respiratory health, with particular interests in tuberculosis, respiratory infections, and the complex interplay between chronic respiratory disease and multiple long-term conditions. She combines advanced epidemiological methods with mixed-methods implementation science to improve the detection, management and prevention of respiratory disease in diverse health system settings.

Claire completed her PhD in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, funded by a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship. Her doctoral research, conducted in partnership with the Biomedical Research and Training Institute in Zimbabwe, generated new evidence on multimorbidity among people affected by tuberculosis and developed a novel, person-centred approach to household contact investigation. This work has informed national policy in Zimbabwe and contributed to international guidance.

Her current research spans the UK and sub-Saharan Africa, with active roles in large multi-country studies on tuberculosis, long-term conditions, and post-TB morbidity. She is Co-Principal Investigator of the MRC-funded RESTORE trial, evaluating rehabilitation with embedded mental health and diabetes care for people with tuberculosis. She also contributes to research on cardiac complications of TB, radiographically apparent but bacteriologically unconfirmed TB, and the systemic impacts of TB on muscle, and supports capacity development through MSc student and early career researcher supervision and mentorship across the UK and Zimbabwe.

Alongside her research, Claire is a Specialty Registrar in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine in North East and Central London, committed to integrating clinical practice with research that improves lung health and reduces health inequalities. She aims to build long-term, equitable collaborations between the UK and global partners, with a focus on person-centred care and addressing the needs of the most vulnerable populations worldwide.
