MrBrian Daughton

Brian is a Teacher of English for Academic Purposes at the Centre for Academic English (CfAE), which supports the college community and specialises in research writing for effective STEMMB communication. He helps design and deliver a range of courses and academic literacy workshops across all  disciplines. One of his key responsibilities coordinating the CfAE staff CPD programme. In this role he organises training events to ensure the team is able to respond to emerging trends and needs in their professional practice. 

Alongside teaching courses for undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral students, Brian teaches on the summer pre-sessional programme, which helps international students prepare for postgraduate study at Imperial. He also provides feedback and advice in 1:1 sessions with students. 

Brian is a trained Emergency First Aider and a Mental Health First Aider. In this capacity, he supports individuals experiencing poor mental health and signposts them to appropriate resources available across the college. He also serves as the Departmental Disability Officer (DDO), ensuring that learning materials are inclusive and meet the needs of the entire college community. As part of this role, he attends DDO forum meetings run by the Disability Advisory Service and disseminates information on inclusive learning and teaching practices to the team. Additionally, he is a member of the LLL-EDI steering group and is committed to upholding Imperial’s values.

His professional interests include academic communication and discourse communities: particularly how students develop expertise as writers within their disciplines. He is also interested in research on online learning, promoting effective classroom interaction, inclusive teaching practices, and using coaching techniques when providing feedback to students.

Brian is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
