BIO

I’m Ben, an Imperial Research Fellow in the School of Public Health I develop mathematical and computational models of infectious diseases to understand more about how they spread and how we can intervene. I have a particular eye towards work with applications improving pandemic preparedness and global health equity. I work closely with my colleagues in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, and in the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Respiratory Infections.

My current work is in modelling multi pathogen systems to understand respiratory virus dynamics. This includes understanding why different viruses re-emerged differently after suppression during the COVID-19 pandemic, and investigating whether infection with one respiratory virus affects your chance to get infected with another. I'm using electronic health record data to explore this questions, but I'm hoping to incorporate more information from serological studies in the future.

My previous work has included theoretical modelling to help understand pandemic risk; machine learning to detect schistosomiasis hotspots and mechanistic modelling to compare the potential impact of different drug product profiles against schistosomiasis; and statistical modelling of antimicrobial resistance. I completed my DPhil at the University of Oxford in 2021 and spent five years doing postdoctoral research in the San Francisco Bay Area at UCSF, Stanford, and Berkeley.

I'm currently interested in working with students who have coding experience in Python (or a similar language) and want to do research in infectious disease dynamics.
