BIO

Ben Barratt is a Professor in Environmental Exposures & Public Health in the School of Public Health. He is Co-Director of the School of Convergence Science - Sustainability and Deputy Director of the Environmental Research Group. He is also co-chair of the School of Public Health's Research Committee. He currently sits on the US Health Effects Institute Research Committee and joint Head of the World Health Organisation's Collaborating Centre for Environmental Risks and Health.

Ben is an internationally recognised environmental exposure scientist, specialising in the innovative use of environmental monitoring technology to gain a deeper understanding of the quality of air that individuals breathe, with a particular focus on vulnerable populations. His work is intersectional and global requiring close collaboration across clinical, natural, engineering, and social science disciplines spanning Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The primary aim of his research is to deliver more targeted evidence on the impacts of exposure to air pollution and other environmental stressors on diverse health outcomes. This evidence has been used to provide stronger epidemiological and toxicological links, evaluation of pollution emissions control interventions, bespoke advice for the health protection of sensitive individuals and an effective means of driving engagement and behaviour change for environmental and public health improvement.
