DrArunashis Sau

Dr Arunashis Sau is a Principal Investigator at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London, where he leads an independent research group developing AI-enhanced electrocardiography and intracardiac electrogram analysis for cardiovascular risk prediction. He is the lead applicant and grant holder on a prestiguous British Heart Foundation Clinical Future Leader's Fellowship, which funds his group's work on a multimodal AI platform for arrhythmia prediction. He currently supervises 4 PhD students.

Dr Sau developed the AIRE (AI-ECG Risk Estimation) platform, with publications in Lancet Digital Health, JAMA Cardiology and European Heart Journal. He chairs the BHF Centre of Research Excellence Early Career Researcher Committee and sits on the Heart Rhythm Society Digital Health Committee. 

Dr Sau’s main research interest is the application of machine learning to further the field of cardiology, including applying deep learning to the surface ECG and to intracardiac electrograms. His work on AI-ECG risk prediction has been awarded multiple awards, including first prize at young investigator awards BCS 2023, HRC 2023, BHRS 2024, e-Cardiology awards EHRA 2022 & 2024 and RSM President's prize 2024. As a clinician-computer scientist, Dr Sau has personally designed and developed the deep learning models underlying his research.

He studied medicine at Imperial College London, where he was awarded a First Class (Hon) BSc degree in Medical Sciences with Cardiovascular sciences and Distinctions in Medical Sciences, Clinical Science and Clinical Practice. He has been awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education by the University of Dundee. His postgraduate clinical training to date has been in the North West Thames deanery, firstly as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow. In 2021, Dr. Sau was awarded a British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellowship during which he developed his interest in cardiovascular data science and AI.
