BIO

Dr Athina Trachalaki is a respiratory clinician with a specialist interest in interstitial lung disease. Her research focuses on disease progression in fibrotic lung conditions and the environmental and clinical factors that influence outcomes.

She completed a PhD at the University of Crete examining inflammasome activation in alveolar macrophages and its role in pulmonary fibrosis. This work explored innate immune dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and profibrotic signalling in fibrotic lung disease.  She was awarded an ERS Clinical Research Fellowship to support this work. Subsequently, as an Academic Clinical Fellow, she investigated how environmental factors influence fibrosis progression, combining clinical cohorts with biomarker and longitudinal outcome data. She has been involved in multiple observational and translational studies in ILD, with particular experience in longitudinal cohort analysis and the use of real-world clinical data.

As an Academic Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London, she works across clinical practice and research, developing expertise in the analysis of large clinical datasets to better characterise disease trajectories and identify factors influencing progression.

Her current work explores the interaction between environmental exposures and disease progression in fibrotic lung disease, with the aim of improving prognosis and prevention.
