MissAlison Shutt

I am a NIHR funded PhD student based in the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit In Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance. I am working with Professor Alison Holmes, Dr Esmita Charani, Dr Diane Ashiru Oredope and Dr James Price.

My research is looking at the impact of health seeking behaviour, the social and cultural determinants of health related to urinary tract infections (UTI) in vulnerable populations living in England. I have a particular interest in public, patient participation and this is integral to the research. The four studies transect the continuum of care and include Study I - The promotion of infection prevention and control initiatives for UTI and related complications; Study 2 - Investigating access, the social determinants of health and outcomes in the primary care UTI pathway; Study 3 - Examination of people with bacteraemia post UTI; Study 4 - An examination of the behaviours of healthcare staff caring for marginalised patients.

My academic interests include public and patient participation, the social determinants of health, examining ways to reduce health inequalities and address health inequity, multi-dimensional poverty and developing and strengthening sustainable healthcare programmes in low middle income countries.

Career
I initially qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London and progressed my clinical career to Director of Nursing and Operations. I moved into general management as Managing Director for a number of NHS and private healthcare institutions.

I was the International Development Director for the Royal Free London hospital group and worked in collaboration with Healthcare UK. I initiated and developed the department and was accountable for all strategic and operational aspects of international business development, encompassing consultancy services; hospital development and design projects; clinical leadership and management training programmes for International Doctors, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals; observer placements and research collaborations. I developed collaborations with many countries including China, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh and Japan.
