DrAnthony Laverty

I am Associate Professor in the Public Health Policy Evaluation Unit within the Department of Primary Care & Public Health at Imperial College London. I joined Imperial as a Research Assistant and completed my PhD here in 2014.

My research interests span public health and the social determinants of health, with a focus on quantitative and quasi-experimental evaluation methods. I have a particular interest in the intersection of transport systems and health. I am Principal Investigator on a project assessing the road safety impacts of Clean Air Zones in England. I have also worked on evaluations of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, examining their effects on road traffic injuries, crime, and emergency service response times. I previously directed a study on the potential transport, health, and inequality impacts of road user charging in England. My current transport work explores the health implications of increasing vehicle sizes and the electrification of motorised transport.

I have a longstanding interest in tobacco control. I led a CRUK-funded project investigating youth smoking and e-cigarette use, including trends in product sources and the influence of social media. My work in this area has also examined the role of tobacco taxation in reducing global infant mortality and I have written a WHO/UNDP policy brief on tobacco control and child development.

Other ongoing projects include supervising PhD research on inequalities in NHS App use, the relationship between health outcomes and support for populist political parties, and the links between social care and public health spending. I welcome PhD enquiries related to any of these topics.

I serve as Co-Director (with Henock Tadesse) of the Imperial Masters in Public Health programme. I lead modules on the commercial determinants of health and on strategies for population health improvement.
