DrAlessio Cortellini, MD

Dr. Alessio Cortellini is a consultant in medical oncology and a clinical scientist with a special focus on cancer immunotherapy and lung cancer. He graduated with honors from the University of L’Aquila in Italy, where he also completed his residency in medical oncology and his PhD in experimental medicine, both with full remarks and honors. After leading the immunotherapy program at the University of L’Aquila for over a year, he moved to London in 2020 to join the early phase clinical trial unit at Imperial College London under the supervision of Dr. David J. Pinato. In July 2022, Dr. Cortellini transitioned to Rome, where he currently serves as a consultant medical oncologist and assistant professor of medicine at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico and Campus Bio-Medico University. Due to his fruitful collaboration and significant research achievements during his fellowship, he continues to hold an honorary academic position as Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London.

Since February 2022, Dr. Cortellini holds the National Scientific Qualification as an associate professor, issued by the Italian Ministry of Education, University, and Research (section of Oncology, Hematology, and Rheumatology). His research focuses on identifying clinic-pathologic predictors for cancer immunotherapy, with a particular emphasis on lung cancer, host factors, and immune-related adverse events. His expertise in this field has garnered wide recognition. Dr. Cortellini was awarded the Third Annual Young Investigator Award in 2020 by the editors of The Oncologist and the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer (JITC) Best Clinical/Translational Cancer Immunotherapy Paper Award in 2021, selected by the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC).

Dr. Cortellini’s ability to network is remarkable, enabling him to coordinate several multi-center studies through a genuine spirit of collaboration with international colleagues. At 39, he has authored or co-authored over 200 papers in esteemed journals, including The Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Annals of Oncology, Journal for Immunotherapy of Cancer, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and European Journal of Cancer. Additionally, he serves as a section editor for the Journal of Translational Medicine under the BMC part of Springer Nature editorial group.
