DrAndrew Clelland

Andrew is a postdoctoral research associate in machine learning and AI for wildfire modelling, working at Data Science Imperial, led by Dr Rossella Arcucci, with the Leverhulme Centre for Wildfires, Environment and Society.

As part of the DataLearning Group, he is involved with creating a state-of-the-art AI model to combine live "human sensor" data from social media, satellite imagery, climate data, and topographic variables to "nowcast" (forecast in real-time) fire spread in 3D, with the intention of informing regional authorities and local communities of potential threats from approaching wildfires.

In addition, Andrew is collaborating with the Fire-Vegetation Interactions working group as part of the LEMONTREE project at the University of Reading.

Andrew completed his PhD (titled: "Fanning the flames: Past and future links between climate change and fire activity across boreal forests") in 2025 at the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge and Durham University, and has collaborated with researchers at Woodwell Climate Research Center and University of Alaska, Fairbanks, as part of the Permafrost Pathways project.
