BIO

Dr Andrea Bernardi is a Research Fellow at the Sargent Centre for Process System Engineering working working on the H2STEEL process, an EU-funded EIC Pathfinder project focused on developing sustainable hydrogen-based steelmaking technologies. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Padova in 2015 and in 2017 he joined Imperial College to work on the EPSRC-funded project “Flexible Routes to Liquid Fuels from CO2 by Advanced Catalysis and Engineering”. Between 2019 and 2022 Dr Bernardi worked at Imperial College as part of the National Interdisciplinary Centre for the Circular Chemical Economy and the Future Targeted Healthcare Manufacturing Hub. Dr Bernardi is a member of the Imperial College London Network of Excellence in Sustainability through Life Cycle Approaches.

Prior to joining Imperial College, he worked at the Chemical Engineering Department of University of Padova in the area of biofuels production from microalgae with a focus on the modelling of light-growth interaction for process optimisation purposes.

Dr. Bernardi’s research interests are: (i) techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) of chemical processes with a focus on chemical recycling of plastic waste and sustainable production of platform chemicals (e.g. methanol, ethylene), (ii) supply chain optimisation of personalised therapies, and (iii) sustainability in pharma, with a focus on the development of novel manufacturing strategies to decrease the environmental footprint.
