BIO
Alfie Balston is a clinical PhD student in the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Healthcare and a clinical pharmacology registrar.
His research focuses on drug repurposing using causal inference on routinely collected healthcare records. Drug development is expensive and takes many years. By identifying unintended and unknown beneficial side effects of existing drugs, they can be used for new conditions that are outside of the initial indication. Using existing drugs that have been through safety trials and regulatory approvals can save time and cost, bringing new treatment options to clinicians and patients.
